IELTS for Immigration

IELTS score requirements for immigration to English-speaking countries

IELTS is the most widely accepted English test for immigration worldwide. Whether you are applying through points-based systems (Australia, Canada, New Zealand), employer-sponsored visas (UK, US), or family reunification pathways, your IELTS score directly affects your eligibility and, in many cases, your ranking against other applicants. Higher scores earn more points and improve your chances significantly.

Why Is IELTS Required for Immigration?

Immigration authorities use IELTS to verify that applicants can function independently in an English-speaking society — understanding public services, communicating with employers, participating in community life, and accessing healthcare and education. Unlike professional registration, which focuses on workplace communication, immigration English requirements are about everyday functional ability. This is why many immigration programs accept IELTS General Training, which tests practical English rather than academic English.

Academic vs General Training

Most immigration programs accept IELTS General Training, which is considered slightly easier than Academic due to shorter, more practical reading passages and a letter-writing task instead of an academic essay. However, if you are also seeking professional registration or university admission, take IELTS Academic — it satisfies all three requirements. Canada, Australia, and New Zealand all accept General Training for immigration.

Typical IELTS Score Requirements

Australia — Skilled Migration (Subclass 189/190)

6.0 minimum (Competent); 7.0 for points; 8.0 for max points

IELTS 6.0 in each band is the minimum for 'competent English.' Band 7.0 in each band earns 10 points. Band 8.0 in each band earns 20 points. For competitive occupations, higher points from IELTS often determine whether you receive an invitation.

Canada — Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker)

CLB 7 minimum (IELTS L:6.0, R:6.0, W:6.0, S:6.0)

CLB 7 is the minimum for FSW eligibility. CLB 9+ (IELTS L:8.0, R:7.0, W:7.0, S:7.0) maximizes CRS points for English. The difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 can be 40+ CRS points — often the deciding factor for an ITA.

New Zealand — Skilled Migrant Category

6.5 overall, no band below 6.0

The standard requirement for most skilled migration pathways. Some visa categories accept 5.0 overall with pre-purchase of English lessons. Higher scores strengthen your application.

UK — Skilled Worker Visa

B1 (IELTS 4.0-5.0) to B2 (IELTS 5.5-6.5)

The UK uses CEFR levels rather than specific IELTS band scores. Most Skilled Worker visa roles require B1 (IELTS 4.0 minimum in each component). Some roles require B2. Check the specific SOC code for your role.

Ireland — Critical Skills Employment Permit

No formal IELTS requirement

Ireland does not mandate IELTS for work permits but employers may require it. For citizenship, Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service may require proof of English at interview stage.

Requirements can change. Always verify current requirements directly with the relevant authority before booking your test.

Preparation Tips

1

For immigration, your IELTS score is a numbers game. Every 0.5 band improvement in any component directly increases your immigration points. Calculate exactly how many points each improvement is worth before deciding where to focus your preparation.

2

Take General Training if you do not need Academic for professional registration or university. GT Reading uses shorter, more practical texts and GT Writing Task 1 is a letter (easier than the Academic graph/chart description for most people).

3

Target your weakest component first — improving from 5.5 to 6.0 in your worst skill is usually easier and earns the same points as improving from 7.0 to 7.5 in your best skill.

4

Book your IELTS test well in advance of your immigration application deadline. Allow time for at least one retake — most immigration applicants need 2-3 attempts to achieve their target score.

5

If you are close to your target but one component is holding you back, consider the computer-delivered IELTS with One Skill Retake. This allows you to retake only the component that fell short rather than the entire test.
