IELTS Score for United Kingdom

UK universities are a top destination for international students, and IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted English test. Russell Group universities typically require 6.5 to 7.0 overall with component minimums of 6.0 to 6.5. Arts, humanities, law, and medical programs often require higher scores than STEM programs. Most universities offer pre-sessional English programs for students who narrowly miss the required score. Some universities have started accepting IELTS One Skill Retake, which allows you to retake a single component rather than the entire test.

The UK's Skilled Worker visa route requires proof of English at level B1 (IELTS 4.0 in each component) for most roles. However, some roles require level B2 (IELTS 5.0-5.5 in each component) depending on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code. If you have a degree taught in English from a majority English-speaking country, you may be exempt from the IELTS requirement. The score required for the visa is generally lower than what universities require, so if you meet university admission criteria, you will likely meet the visa requirement as well.

For settlement (ILR) in the UK, you need to demonstrate English at level B1 (intermediate). This can be shown through IELTS Life Skills (a shorter test focused on speaking and listening at A1 or B1 level) or through an IELTS for UKVI test meeting the B1 threshold. Settlement English requirements are generally lower than university admission requirements. If you entered the UK with a student or work visa that required a higher level, you have already met the settlement requirement.
