IELTS Score for United Kingdom

IELTS scores for studying, working, and settling in the UK

The UK uses IELTS for university admissions, visa applications, and settlement. A key distinction in the UK context is between standard IELTS (accepted by universities) and IELTS for UKVI (required for visa applications through UK Visas and Immigration). Understanding which version you need, and the specific score requirements for your visa or university, is critical for a smooth application process.

Academic vs General Training for United Kingdom

For UK university admissions, standard IELTS Academic is widely accepted. For UK visa applications (Skilled Worker, Student, Settlement), you may need IELTS for UKVI (also known as IELTS SELT) — this is the same test but taken at a UKVI-approved test centre with additional security measures. Not all IELTS test centres offer UKVI sessions. For university applications, most institutions accept standard IELTS Academic results, but some may require UKVI IELTS if you are applying for a Student visa with a lower-tier sponsor. Always check both your university's and UKVI's requirements.

Common Use Cases

University admissions

6.0–7.5 overall (varies by program)

UK universities are a top destination for international students, and IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted English test. Russell Group universities typically require 6.5 to 7.0 overall with component minimums of 6.0 to 6.5. Arts, humanities, law, and medical programs often require higher scores than STEM programs. Most universities offer pre-sessional English programs for students who narrowly miss the required score. Some universities have started accepting IELTS One Skill Retake, which allows you to retake a single component rather than the entire test.

Skilled Worker visa

4.0–5.5 per component (varies by role)

The UK's Skilled Worker visa route requires proof of English at level B1 (IELTS 4.0 in each component) for most roles. However, some roles require level B2 (IELTS 5.0-5.5 in each component) depending on the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code. If you have a degree taught in English from a majority English-speaking country, you may be exempt from the IELTS requirement. The score required for the visa is generally lower than what universities require, so if you meet university admission criteria, you will likely meet the visa requirement as well.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (Settlement)

B1 level (IELTS 4.0+ per component)

For settlement (ILR) in the UK, you need to demonstrate English at level B1 (intermediate). This can be shown through IELTS Life Skills (a shorter test focused on speaking and listening at A1 or B1 level) or through an IELTS for UKVI test meeting the B1 threshold. Settlement English requirements are generally lower than university admission requirements. If you entered the UK with a student or work visa that required a higher level, you have already met the settlement requirement.

Score requirements vary by program, institution, and visa route. Always verify current requirements directly with the relevant institution or government body before booking your test.

How to Plan Your Preparation

1

First, determine whether you need standard IELTS or IELTS for UKVI. If your application is purely for university admission through a trusted sponsor, standard IELTS Academic is usually sufficient. If you need to apply for a Student visa independently or for a work/settlement visa, you may need IELTS for UKVI.

2

Check your university's specific requirements, including any component minimums. UK universities often set component score floors — for example, 'Overall 6.5 with no component below 6.0.' A strong overall score does not help if one component is below the minimum.

3

Explore pre-sessional English options if you score close to the requirement. Many UK universities offer 6-12 week pre-sessional courses for students who are 0.5-1.0 bands below the entry requirement. These typically require IELTS for UKVI.

4

Book your test early. IELTS for UKVI sessions have fewer available dates and centres than standard IELTS, so availability can be limited, especially during peak application seasons.

5

If you are applying for a Skilled Worker visa, verify the English level required for your specific SOC code. The required level depends on the nature of the job, not just the visa category. Some roles require only A1, while others require B1 or B2.
