Academic vs General Training
IELTS Academic is required for all academic scholarships. There are no exceptions — scholarship programs always require the Academic module because the awards are for university study. Ensure you take Academic, not General Training, or your application will be rejected regardless of your score.
Typical IELTS Score Requirements
Chevening Scholarship (UK)
Chevening requires 6.5 overall with no component below 5.5. Scores must be submitted by the deadline — no conditional offers. This is competitive: most successful applicants score above the minimum.
Fulbright Program (US)
Fulbright requirements vary by country commission and program type. Some commissions set minimums of 6.0; others require 7.0. Check your country's Fulbright commission for specific requirements.
Australia Awards (DFAT)
Australia Awards require 6.5 overall with 6.0 minimum in each band. Applicants who score 5.0-6.0 overall may be eligible for English language training (ELT) before commencing studies.
Erasmus Mundus (EU)
Each Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's program sets its own IELTS requirement. Most require 6.5-7.0 overall. Some accept alternative evidence of English for candidates from English-medium programs.
Government / University Merit Scholarships
Requirements depend on the specific institution and scholarship. Merit-based scholarships at top universities (Oxford, Cambridge, ETH Zurich) typically require 7.0-7.5 to align with the program's admission threshold.

Preparation Tips
For scholarship applications, aim for 0.5-1.0 bands above the minimum requirement. Scholarship selection is competitive and a strong IELTS score demonstrates commitment and capability. Meeting the minimum is rarely enough.
Many scholarships have strict IELTS deadlines — your scores must be available by the application closing date. Plan to take IELTS at least 2-3 months before the deadline to allow for one retake.
Writing is often the most scrutinized component for scholarships because academic success depends heavily on written communication. If your Writing score is 6.0 but other components are 7.0+, consider retaking to balance your profile.
Some scholarships offer pre-departure English training for candidates who narrowly miss the threshold. Check whether your target scholarship has this provision before assuming a slightly low score is disqualifying.
Keep multiple copies of your IELTS TRF (Test Report Form) — some scholarships require original documents sent directly from the test center. Order additional TRFs when you register for the test.
