Renewable Energy: Pros and Cons

The question, a model answer written to the band 7 descriptors, why it scores that band against the 4 official criteria, topic vocabulary, and a common mistake to avoid.

Advantages and disadvantages

Many countries are investing heavily in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power instead of fossil fuels. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this shift? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

The global shift toward renewable energy brings substantial environmental benefits, but it also creates practical and economic challenges that are often underestimated in public discussion.

The primary advantage is the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Solar and wind power generate electricity without burning fossil fuels, directly addressing one of the main drivers of climate change, and unlike coal or oil, the fuel source itself, sunlight and wind, is free and effectively inexhaustible. Renewable energy also reduces a country's dependence on imported fuel, which has clear strategic and economic benefits, as seen in several European nations that accelerated renewable investment after experiencing energy supply disruptions.

However, the transition carries real disadvantages. Solar and wind generation are inherently intermittent, producing power only when the sun shines or the wind blows, which creates supply reliability challenges that still require expensive battery storage or backup power plants to solve fully. The upfront infrastructure costs are also substantial: building large-scale solar farms and wind turbines, along with the transmission lines needed to connect them to cities, requires enormous capital investment that can take years to recoup. There are further concerns about land use and the environmental impact of manufacturing solar panels and batteries, which require mining rare minerals through processes that are not themselves free of environmental harm.

On balance, I believe the long-term environmental benefits of renewable energy clearly outweigh these transitional costs, but governments need realistic planning around storage technology and manufacturing supply chains rather than treating the shift as a simple, costless substitution.

In conclusion, renewable energy offers a genuine path away from fossil fuel dependence, but only if its practical limitations are addressed with the same seriousness as its environmental promise.

Why this answer scores band 7

Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.

  • Task Response: advantages and disadvantages are both substantiated with concrete mechanisms (intermittency, supply chains) rather than vague generalities.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: clear paragraph-level organisation moving from benefit to cost to a weighed conclusion, with cohesive transitions throughout.
  • Lexical Resource: accurate technical vocabulary ('intermittent', 'transmission lines', 'supply chain') appropriate to an environmental and economic discussion.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: sustained use of complex sentences with subordinate clauses, maintaining accuracy even in longer constructions.

Common mistake on this type of question

⚠Candidates often state that renewable energy has 'no disadvantages', which examiners read as a lack of critical thinking. Every real-world policy has trade-offs, and naming them honestly strengthens Task Response.
