Influencers vs Traditional Advertising

The question, a model answer written to the band 7 descriptors, why it scores that band against the 4 official criteria, topic vocabulary, and a common mistake to avoid.

Discuss both views

Some people believe that social media influencers are now more effective at promoting products than traditional advertising such as television commercials, while others disagree. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Whether social media influencers have genuinely overtaken traditional advertising in effectiveness is debated among marketers, and both positions draw on real, if partial, evidence.

Those who favour influencer marketing point to the trust and perceived authenticity influencers build with their audience over time, which traditional advertisements, instantly recognisable as paid promotion, generally struggle to replicate. A recommendation from a creator a viewer has followed for years can feel like genuine personal advice rather than a corporate sales pitch, and this perceived authenticity often translates into measurably higher purchase intent, particularly among younger audiences who have grown up largely distrustful of conventional advertising. Influencer campaigns are also highly targetable, reaching specific niche audiences that broad television advertising cannot address as precisely or cost-effectively.

Supporters of traditional advertising counter that television and other mass-media campaigns still reach far larger audiences simultaneously and carry an institutional credibility that influencer content, however trusted individually, cannot always match at scale. Major product launches still frequently rely on television and large-scale digital advertising to build broad awareness quickly, since no single influencer's following, however engaged, can match the sheer reach of a well-placed national campaign during a high-visibility moment such as a major sporting event.

In my opinion, the two approaches increasingly serve different purposes rather than genuinely competing: traditional advertising excels at building broad, fast brand awareness, while influencer marketing excels at building trust and driving conversion within specific, engaged audience segments.

In conclusion, rather than one approach replacing the other, the most effective modern marketing strategies combine both in a way that was uncommon even a decade ago.

Why this answer scores band 7

Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.

  • Task Response: both views are developed with specific reasoning (perceived authenticity, institutional credibility) before a synthesising opinion rather than picking a single winner.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: clear view-by-view structure with a final opinion that integrates rather than simply repeats the two positions discussed.
  • Lexical Resource: precise marketing vocabulary ('purchase intent', 'niche audience', 'brand awareness') used accurately and with genuine topic command.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: sustained use of complex sentence structures, including comparative clauses, with very high accuracy throughout.
