Model answer (band 7)

The shift from physical stores to online shopping has transformed consumer habits within a single generation, bringing clear convenience alongside less obvious social and economic costs.

The benefits for consumers are substantial. Online shopping allows people to compare prices across multiple retailers within seconds, read reviews from previous buyers, and purchase items at any hour without travelling anywhere. For people in rural areas or with limited mobility, this access to a vastly wider range of products than any local shop could stock is particularly valuable. Retailers benefit too, since an online store has far lower overhead costs than a physical location, savings that are sometimes passed on to customers as lower prices.

However, the disadvantages are considerable. Small independent shops, especially in town centres, have struggled to compete with large online retailers and many have closed permanently, leaving high streets with empty storefronts and fewer reasons for communities to gather in person. Online shopping also removes the sensory experience of examining a product directly, leading to higher return rates when items do not match expectations, which carries its own environmental cost in additional packaging and transport emissions. There are further concerns about data privacy, as online retailers collect detailed purchasing data that can be used in ways customers may not fully understand or consent to.

On balance, I believe online shopping has delivered genuine convenience and choice, but at a cost to local economies and community life that policymakers have been slow to address, for instance through fairer taxation of large online retailers relative to local shops.

In conclusion, the trend offers real benefits to individual consumers but measurable harm to local high streets, meaning the overall verdict depends heavily on which group's interests are weighed more heavily.

Why this answer scores band 7

Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.

  • Task Response: advantages and disadvantages are both given concrete, specific examples (rural access, high street closures) rather than generic statements.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: clear topic sentences signal each new idea, and the 'on balance' paragraph cohesively ties the discussion together before the conclusion.
  • Lexical Resource: precise vocabulary ('overhead costs', 'high streets', 'return rates') appropriate to an economic and social discussion of the topic.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: accurate use of passive voice and complex noun phrases, with controlled, varied sentence length throughout.

Common mistake on this type of question

⚠Writers often treat 'advantages and disadvantages' as two unconnected lists. Stronger essays link the two sides together, for example showing how a consumer advantage creates a social disadvantage elsewhere.
