Band 7.5 sample answer (298 words)

Moving to a country where the local language is unfamiliar is undoubtedly demanding. I largely agree that it creates both social and practical difficulties, although I believe these are usually temporary rather than permanent.
On a practical level, the obstacles appear almost immediately. Newcomers who cannot read official forms, follow a doctor's instructions or negotiate a tenancy agreement risk making costly errors or even being exploited. Even routine errands, such as topping up a transport card or collecting a prescription, can become stressful when every exchange depends on gestures and a translation app.
The social consequences, however, may be more damaging in the long run. Friendships and working relationships are built through humour, small talk and shared references, none of which survive well in broken sentences. As a result, many migrants end up spending their free time exclusively with compatriots. This is comfortable, but it can leave them cut off from the wider community. Over months, such isolation may lead to loneliness, anxiety and a persistent sense of not belonging, which is a genuine hardship rather than a mere inconvenience.
That said, I would not describe these problems as inevitable. Language classes, neighbourhood groups and employers who provide proper orientation can shorten the adjustment period considerably. Moreover, local residents are often more patient than newcomers expect, and a willingness to try, however imperfectly, tends to be met with kindness. Plenty of people who struggled badly during their first year later describe living abroad as one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives, precisely because they had to overcome the language barrier.
In conclusion, I agree that living in a country without speaking its language can cause serious social and practical problems, but with sufficient support and determination, most people eventually learn to cope and often to thrive.
Why this answer scores Band 7.5
- Task Response: The essay states a clear position (largely agree) and addresses both the social and the practical problems named in the prompt, while qualifying the view in paragraph four.
- Coherence and Cohesion: Each body paragraph has one central idea, and linkers such as 'however', 'as a result' and 'that said' guide the reader through the shift from practical to social and then to a counterpoint.
- Lexical Resource: Collocations such as 'costly errors', 'cut off from the wider community' and 'adjustment period' are precise and natural, with little repetition.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The essay mixes relative clauses, participle phrases and concessive structures ('although', 'however imperfectly') with consistent accuracy.
