A growing number of patients now turn to herbal remedies, acupuncture and similar treatments rather than consulting a doctor. In my view this is a largely negative development, although it is not without merit.
The main danger is that unproven treatments can delay proper diagnosis. A person who tries herbal tea for persistent chest pain, or a homeopathic remedy for a lump, may lose weeks or months in which a serious illness advances. Conventional medicine is based on clinical trials that test both safety and effectiveness, whereas many alternative products have never been subjected to such scrutiny. Some even contain ingredients that interact harmfully with prescribed drugs, and sellers are often poorly regulated.
Furthermore, the trend can encourage distrust of science. When influential figures promote natural cures online, vulnerable people may refuse vaccines or reject treatments such as chemotherapy, with tragic results. Such cases show that the harm is not limited to the individual, because falling vaccination rates can expose entire communities to preventable diseases.
Nevertheless, I accept that some alternative approaches offer real benefits. Practices such as massage, yoga or acupuncture can relieve chronic back pain and stress, and patients often value the longer, more personal consultations that practitioners provide. Many people turn to them because they feel rushed by overstretched health services. When used alongside conventional care, as complementary rather than replacement therapies, they may improve wellbeing.
In conclusion, abandoning doctors for alternative treatments puts health at risk, so I regard the trend as negative. Governments should regulate such products more strictly, and public health services should allow doctors more time with patients, so that people feel less need to look elsewhere.
Why this answer scores Band 7.5
- Task Response: A clear opinion, 'largely negative', is given at the start and supported by concrete examples, while a fair concession about complementary therapies shows balanced thinking.
- Coherence and Cohesion: Paragraphs build from individual risk to social harm and then to a concession, linked by 'Furthermore' and 'Nevertheless' and by clear reference words.
- Lexical Resource: Collocations such as 'delay proper diagnosis', 'clinical trials', 'chronic back pain' and 'overstretched health services' are precise and suit the topic.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The writing shows varied structures, including 'whereas' contrast, relative clauses, a participial phrase and 'so that' purpose clauses, with accurate tense and article use.
