Should Remote Work Become Permanent?
The question, a model answer written to the band 7 descriptors, why it scores that band against the 4 official criteria, topic vocabulary, and a common mistake to avoid.
Opinion essay
Since the pandemic, many companies have allowed employees to work from home permanently rather than requiring them to return to the office. To what extent do you agree that remote work should become the standard arrangement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

I partly agree that remote work should become more common, but I do not believe it should fully replace office-based work for most roles, since the two arrangements suit different kinds of tasks and people.
The case for remote work is strong for certain types of jobs. Tasks that require sustained individual focus, such as writing reports or analysing data, are often completed more efficiently at home, free from the frequent interruptions of an open-plan office. Employees also save significant time and money on commuting, and many report better work-life balance when they can structure their day around personal responsibilities, such as childcare, without the rigid boundaries of a nine-to-five office schedule.
However, remote work has genuine costs that are easy to underestimate. Spontaneous conversations in a shared office often generate ideas and solve problems in ways that scheduled video calls rarely replicate, since the most useful exchanges are frequently the ones nobody planned. New employees, in particular, benefit enormously from the informal mentorship and company culture absorbed simply by being physically present among more experienced colleagues, something that is difficult to replicate through a screen. Collaborative, creative work, such as product design, also tends to suffer when teams cannot easily gather around a whiteboard together.
In my view, a hybrid model, where employees split their time between home and office depending on the nature of their work that day, captures the benefits of both arrangements without forcing an unnecessary, one-size-fits-all choice between them.
In conclusion, remote work deserves a permanent place in modern employment, but as one option within a flexible, hybrid system rather than as a wholesale replacement for office-based collaboration.
