Studying Abroad: Pros and Cons
The question, a model answer written to the band 7 descriptors, why it scores that band against the 4 official criteria, topic vocabulary, and a common mistake to avoid.
Advantages and disadvantages
An increasing number of students choose to complete their degree in a foreign country rather than their home country. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Studying overseas has become increasingly common, and while it brings clear personal and academic benefits, it also carries financial and emotional costs that students should weigh carefully.
The most obvious advantage is exposure to a different culture and language, which builds adaptability that employers now actively look for. A graduate who has lived independently in another country typically demonstrates stronger problem-solving skills and cross-cultural communication than one who never left home, simply because they have had to navigate unfamiliar systems alone. Studying abroad can also open doors to institutions with stronger reputations or specialised programmes unavailable domestically, which may translate into better career prospects after graduation.
However, the disadvantages are significant. International tuition fees and living costs are frequently far higher than domestic rates, leaving many students with substantial debt. Homesickness and social isolation are also common, particularly in the first year, when language barriers can make it difficult to build the kind of close friendships that support mental wellbeing. Furthermore, students sometimes return home to find their foreign qualification is not fully recognised or valued by local employers, undermining the original motivation for studying abroad.
On balance, I believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks for students who research their destination carefully and plan financially, but the trend is not automatically positive for everyone. A student with limited funds and strong local job prospects might reasonably gain more from staying home and investing the money saved into other opportunities.
In conclusion, studying abroad offers valuable personal growth and career advantages, but only when the financial and emotional costs are realistically planned for in advance.
Why this answer scores band 7
Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.
- Task Response: covers advantages and disadvantages with roughly equal depth and gives a balanced final judgement rather than a one-sided conclusion.
- Coherence and Cohesion: clear paragraphing by advantage/disadvantage with a cohesive 'on balance' pivot that signals the evaluative stage of the essay.
- Lexical Resource: natural collocations such as 'cross-cultural communication', 'homesickness', and 'financially plan for' rather than memorised phrases.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: good control of conditional structures ('might reasonably gain more') with only occasional minor slips expected at this level.
