I disagree with the view that homework serves no educational purpose. While poorly designed homework can certainly feel pointless, well-structured assignments play a genuine role in consolidating classroom learning and building independent study habits.
The strongest argument for homework is reinforcement. A single lesson on, say, quadratic equations rarely gives students enough repetition to internalise the method. Working through problems at home, away from the pressure of a timed classroom, allows pupils to make mistakes privately and correct their own understanding before the next lesson. Teachers I spoke to during my own schooling consistently noted that students who skipped homework struggled far more in follow-up tests, even when they had appeared to grasp the concept in class.
Homework also teaches time management and self-discipline, skills that formal lessons rarely address directly. University and working life both demand that people complete tasks without constant supervision, and homework is often a child's first experience of that responsibility. Removing it entirely would delay the development of these habits until much later, when the stakes are higher.
That said, I accept that homework can be counterproductive when it is excessive or merely repetitive busywork copied from a textbook. In such cases the problem lies with poor design, not with the principle of out-of-class study itself. The solution is better-calibrated assignments, not abolition.
In conclusion, although homework clearly needs reform in how it is designed and assigned, scrapping it altogether would remove a valuable tool for reinforcing classroom learning and cultivating independence. Schools should focus their efforts on improving the quality of homework rather than eliminating the practice entirely.
Why this answer scores band 7.5
Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.
- Task Response: takes a clear, consistent position (disagree) and supports it with two distinct, developed main reasons rather than a vague list.
- Coherence and Cohesion: each paragraph has one clear idea, with a concession paragraph that is logically signalled ('That said') before returning to the thesis.
- Lexical Resource: precise collocations ('consolidating classroom learning', 'poorly calibrated assignments', 'busywork') used accurately rather than for decoration.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: a mix of complex sentences (relative clauses, conditionals) with no repeated errors; minor room for more varied punctuation.
