Advantages and disadvantages

More patients are now consulting doctors remotely through video calls rather than visiting a clinic in person. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model answer (band 7)

Remote medical consultations, accelerated considerably by the pandemic, have become a standard part of modern healthcare, bringing clear convenience benefits alongside meaningful clinical limitations.

The most obvious advantage is accessibility. Patients in rural areas, or those with limited mobility, no longer need to travel long distances or arrange transport simply to discuss a minor symptom or renew a prescription, which saves both time and money for people who previously had to take an entire day off work for a ten-minute appointment. Remote consultations also reduce pressure on physical clinic space and allow doctors to see more patients overall, since administrative time between in-person appointments is largely eliminated.

However, the clinical disadvantages are significant. A doctor cannot physically examine a patient over video, palpate an abdomen, listen to breathing with a stethoscope, or notice subtle physical signs that only become apparent in person, which means certain conditions risk being missed or misdiagnosed. Video consultations also depend on reliable internet access and a degree of technical comfort that disadvantages older patients or those in areas with poor connectivity, potentially widening rather than closing healthcare access gaps for the most vulnerable groups. There is additionally a risk that the convenience of video calls encourages doctors to treat more complex cases remotely than is genuinely appropriate, simply to save time.

On balance, I believe telemedicine works well as a first point of contact and for routine follow-ups, but it should not fully replace in-person examination for anything beyond straightforward cases.

In conclusion, remote consultations offer genuine convenience and efficiency gains, but only when used to complement, rather than substitute for, physical examination where it is clinically necessary.

Why this answer scores band 7

Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.

  • Task Response: both sides are developed with specific clinical detail (palpation, stethoscope) rather than superficial convenience-versus-risk generalities.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: clear paragraph division between benefit and clinical limitation, with an 'on balance' section that weighs rather than simply lists.
  • Lexical Resource: precise medical and technical vocabulary ('palpate', 'connectivity', 'first point of contact') used with genuine accuracy.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: strong control of complex sentence structures, including non-finite clauses, with very few errors.

Common mistake on this type of question

⚠Essays on telemedicine often ignore the clinical dimension entirely and focus only on 'saving time'. The strongest answers show awareness of what a video call genuinely cannot replace.
