Free Healthcare vs Private Healthcare

The question, a model answer written to the band 7.5 descriptors, why it scores that band against the 4 official criteria, topic vocabulary, and a common mistake to avoid.

Discuss both views

Some people believe that healthcare should be provided entirely free by the government, while others think private healthcare, where patients pay for faster and better treatment, should be encouraged. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

The balance between free, government-funded healthcare and a private, paid alternative is one of the most contested questions in public policy, with compelling arguments supporting each model.

Advocates of entirely free, state-funded healthcare argue that access to treatment should not depend on a person's income, since illness is largely a matter of circumstance rather than choice. Countries with strong public systems, such as the United Kingdom, show that universal access can be achieved without direct charges at the point of use, reducing the risk that people delay seeking treatment for financial reasons until conditions become more serious and more expensive to treat. Equal access, in this view, is itself a moral requirement of a fair society.

Supporters of private healthcare counter that competition and direct payment drive efficiency and innovation that purely state-run systems often lack. Private hospitals can typically offer shorter waiting times and invest in newer equipment because patient fees fund upgrades directly, rather than competing with every other public spending priority for limited government budgets. They also argue that allowing a private option relieves pressure on public systems, since patients who can afford to pay privately free up public resources for those who cannot.

In my opinion, the strongest systems combine both: a robust, well-funded public system that guarantees basic care for everyone, alongside an optional private sector for those who choose to pay for additional speed or comfort. This hybrid approach, used in countries like Australia, avoids forcing a choice between fairness and efficiency.

In conclusion, rather than treating public and private healthcare as mutually exclusive, the most effective policy blends universal public coverage with a regulated private option alongside it.

Why this answer scores band 7.5

Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.

  • Task Response: both views are given genuinely substantive, example-backed treatment (UK, Australia) before a clearly reasoned hybrid opinion is presented.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: a textbook discuss-both-views structure, with a synthesising rather than simply averaging conclusion that adds value.
  • Lexical Resource: a wide range of precise vocabulary ('state-funded', 'waiting times', 'hybrid approach') used naturally without repetition.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: sustained accuracy across complex sentences, including comparative structures and purpose clauses.

Common mistake on this type of question

⚠A 'both views plus opinion' essay that simply says 'both have good points' without specifying a real position will be marked down for Task Response, the opinion needs to be a genuine, specific stance.
