Model answer (band 7)

Urbanisation, the ongoing movement of people from rural areas into cities, has reshaped societies worldwide, offering genuine economic opportunity while straining the infrastructure and social fabric of the cities absorbing this growth.

The clearest advantage is economic opportunity. Cities concentrate jobs, particularly in manufacturing and services, far more densely than rural areas can typically offer, drawing migrants seeking higher wages and a wider range of career paths than agricultural work alone provides. Urban centres also deliver efficiencies of scale in public services, since concentrating a population makes it more cost-effective to build hospitals, universities, and public transport networks than spreading the same infrastructure thinly across dispersed rural communities.

However, rapid urbanisation brings serious disadvantages when city infrastructure cannot keep pace with population growth. Housing shortages drive up costs and frequently push lower-income migrants into informal settlements lacking adequate sanitation or safe construction, a pattern visible in the rapidly expanding slums surrounding many cities in developing economies. Overcrowding also strains transport systems, hospitals, and schools, reducing the very quality of life that initially attracted people to move. Rural areas, meanwhile, often experience a damaging population drain, losing younger, economically active residents and leaving behind an ageing population with a shrinking local economy and fewer essential services.

On balance, I believe urbanisation delivers real economic benefits, but only when accompanied by deliberate, well-funded urban planning that expands infrastructure in step with population growth rather than reactively.

In conclusion, urbanisation offers genuine opportunity, but its disadvantages become serious wherever cities grow faster than the infrastructure and planning needed to support that growth responsibly.

Why this answer scores band 7

Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.

  • Task Response: both advantages and disadvantages are supported with specific mechanisms (efficiencies of scale, informal settlements) rather than generic claims.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: clear benefit-cost structure with an 'on balance' evaluative paragraph that weighs the two sides rather than listing them.
  • Lexical Resource: precise, topic-specific vocabulary ('informal settlement', 'efficiencies of scale', 'population drain') used accurately and naturally.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: strong control of complex sentence structures, including passive constructions, with very few grammatical errors.

Common mistake on this type of question

⚠Essays on urbanisation often discuss only the city side and ignore the effect on the rural areas people leave behind. Addressing both sides of the migration shows a more complete Task Response.
