Band 7.5 sample answer (285 words)

Economic growth is often presented as the main task of any government, but others argue that a country must also advance in different ways. While I accept the importance of a strong economy, I believe that balanced development is the wiser goal.

Governments that prioritise the economy have understandable reasons. A growing economy creates jobs, raises household incomes and generates tax revenue that can be spent on schools, hospitals and infrastructure. Countries such as South Korea transformed themselves within a few generations by concentrating on industry and exports, lifting millions of people out of poverty. Without a solid financial base, ambitious social programmes are simply unaffordable.

Nevertheless, growth alone does not guarantee a good quality of life. Rapid industrialisation can damage rivers and air quality, leaving citizens with serious health problems that offset their higher wages. Similarly, a nation may record impressive figures while a small elite captures most of the wealth, which fuels resentment and social unrest. Progress in education, healthcare, gender equality and environmental protection is what turns a rich country into a decent place to live. These improvements also reinforce the economy in return, because healthy, well-educated workers are more productive and innovative.

In my view, the two kinds of progress are not rivals but partners. Economic strength provides the resources, while social and environmental advances ensure that those resources benefit ordinary people and remain sustainable. A government that pursued money alone would risk building prosperity on shaky foundations.

In conclusion, economic progress deserves a central place in national planning, yet it should not be treated as the only measure of success. Policy makers ought to pursue a broader vision that includes public well-being, fairness and the protection of the natural world.

Why this answer scores Band 7.5

  • Task Response: Both views receive developed support with the South Korea example, and the writer gives a clear opinion that the two kinds of progress work together.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: Paragraphs follow a logical order and phrases like 'nevertheless', 'similarly' and 'in return' connect ideas naturally.
  • Lexical Resource: Precise vocabulary such as 'tax revenue', 'industrialisation' and 'social unrest' avoids vague words like 'good' or 'bad'.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The essay uses participle clauses, contrast structures and conditionals with very few errors.

Common mistake on this question

⚠Candidates often keep 'other types of progress' vague and never name any, such as health or education. They may also write only one side and forget that a discuss-both-views task needs both explored before the opinion.
