Compulsory vs Voluntary National Service

The question, a model answer written to the band 7 descriptors, why it scores that band against the 4 official criteria, topic vocabulary, and a common mistake to avoid.

Discuss both views

Some countries require all young adults to complete a period of compulsory national or military service, while others argue this should remain entirely voluntary. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Compulsory national service remains a genuinely divisive policy, with supporters and critics drawing on quite different evidence to support their respective positions.

Advocates argue that mandatory service instils discipline, teamwork, and a sense of shared national identity that benefits both the individual and the country as a whole. Countries such as South Korea and Israel, which maintain compulsory service due to specific security concerns, credit it partly with social cohesion across otherwise divided populations, as citizens from different backgrounds train and serve together rather than remaining in separate social circles. Supporters also note practical skills gained during service, from discipline and physical fitness to technical training, that some participants later carry into civilian careers.

Critics counter that compulsion interrupts education and career development at a formative age, delaying entry into university or the workforce during years that are difficult to recover later in life. They also argue that conscripted personnel are often less motivated and effective than genuine volunteers who have chosen military or civil service as a career, meaning that compulsory systems may not even achieve the operational benefits their supporters claim. Furthermore, critics note that modern, highly technical militaries increasingly need specialised, long-term expertise rather than large numbers of short-term conscripts, making the model increasingly outdated for genuine security needs.

In my opinion, voluntary service with strong incentives, such as funded education or career training in exchange for service, achieves most of the stated benefits without the resentment and lost opportunity that compulsion creates.

In conclusion, while compulsory service offers certain social benefits, a well-incentivised voluntary system better balances national needs with individual opportunity.

Why this answer scores band 7

Mapped to the 4 official IELTS Writing criteria.

  • Task Response: both views are developed with country-specific examples (South Korea, Israel) before a clear, reasoned personal opinion is given.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: logical movement from the case for compulsion to the case against, concluding with a synthesising alternative rather than simply picking a side.
  • Lexical Resource: precise vocabulary ('social cohesion', 'conscripted personnel', 'operational benefit') demonstrating genuine command of the topic.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: sustained accuracy across long, complex sentences, including comparative and purpose structures.

Common mistake on this type of question

⚠Discuss-both-views essays on military topics often drift into personal opinion about war in general rather than the specific policy question (compulsory versus voluntary service) actually being asked.
